Artists put in HUGE amounts of time and energy to create, whether it's a book or a canvas or a quilt or afghan, and they have to depend on the vagaries of the buyers to hopefully get a fair price for their end product. It's kind of like being a SAHP -- we put in all the hours, and we do a damn lot of work, but because it doesn't come with a regular, hourly paycheck (or has a social stigmatization as being a job for a dilettante or an odd type) it has little to no value in the eyes of the average observer. Yet the world would be a far less enjoyable place without it.tracykitnreadshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05179481691225822227noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-354116340151927281.post-73802414355803097312013-04-10T06:45:54.475-05:002013-04-10T06:45:54.475-05:00Hey, that would be great! For as much as romance novels and spy thrillers with prominent gay characters are opening the eyes of women ... graphic novels and comics are doing the same for boys and young men.

A stereotypical view, probably. But depending which poll or study you listen to boys of all ages make up more of the buying audience for comics and graphic novels. And they seem to be the ones struggling the most in terms of accepting their own or someone else's sexuality. Not to say that women have it that much easier, just that there is a more widely publicized fantasy-factor of two women together that men don't seem to mind so much.

And when kids see their superheroes (within any medium really ... comics, sports, tv, politics) fall for either sex then they take that with them into adulthood.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-354116340151927281.post-57675742371723857442012-05-31T19:34:00.359-05:002012-05-31T19:34:00.359-05:00Busyish with work. We all have this human failing of being quick to judge and then to spout off abou it - or at the very least to compartmentalize others in our minds. Oh, he's a stuffed-shirt. She's a dippy broad. That kind of thing.

Women (humans) do get to make choices. They get to live with the consequences of those choices. And they get to enjoy the benefits of their labors and the outcomes those choices produce. What a concept. We are free to choose what want to do with our free time and if that means reading a book others don't approve of, too fricking bad.JM Cartwrighthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15079799019564716584noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-354116340151927281.post-51714522977076097002012-04-13T08:06:26.013-05:002012-04-13T08:06:26.013-05:00My mother and I have this argument constantly; she...My mother and I have this argument constantly; she's furious with me. I'm college educated. I have all these choices! Choices she never had, things she could never have done! And what, exactly, did I do with that? I became a mother and a wife and I stay at home. She hates that with all the choices out there, and all the options that she feels that were denied her, I picked the one thing that she was "forced" to do.

But you know, that's the thing about freedom. You get to make what suits you best. And honestly, I've tried the corporate route. Dress suits and meetings and spreadsheets. I hated it.

At the same time, I really hate being dismissed as a stay at home mom. Like I have less intelligence, because I chose not to sit through boring corporate meetings? Thinking I have less to say because I don't have to press my pant suits? (By the way, I'll shut up about my kid the instant you shut up about your boss. your job ain't any more interesting to me... just so ya know!) (PSS - can we drop the term "babysitting" from our vocabulary when we're talking about men watching their own kids? It's NOT freaking babysitting. It's being a DAD. Jeez, get with the freaking program here.)

I believe you know my best friend - Elizabeth Brooks? She and I wrote our first gay romance together about... oh, I want to say 10 or 12 years ago now. WAAAAAY back before we knew there was a market for it. It was just something we did to entertain each other and a few of our select friends.

So erotica is nothing new for us... and honestly, no matter what label the press is putting on it, I'm glad that it's "getting out there." I'm glad people - women - are discovering that it exists, that there is something out there for them.

I just wish "the press" would stop being so condescending about it. Mommy-porn. Like I'm being patted on the head and told "isn't that cute..." F*** you.

Better yet... let me go over here and f*&^ myself :D since you can't seem to do it right.Lynnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13102363251376084521noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-354116340151927281.post-2876431593715395482012-04-11T11:58:46.877-05:002012-04-11T11:58:46.877-05:00One of the pleasures of being experienced at life....One of the pleasures of being experienced at life.JM Cartwrighthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15079799019564716584noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-354116340151927281.post-71351588409165263202012-04-11T11:29:33.826-05:002012-04-11T11:29:33.826-05:00Me too.Me too.Tarahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06197876943719101132noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-354116340151927281.post-56111216805975618512012-04-11T11:28:38.802-05:002012-04-11T11:28:38.802-05:00That's so true, and I know I'm much better...That's so true, and I know I'm much better at seeing potential consequences now than I was as a young adult (although I still don't get it right all the time).Tarahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06197876943719101132noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-354116340151927281.post-76650825433006169312012-04-11T11:22:50.758-05:002012-04-11T11:22:50.758-05:00Lori - glad you're here!Lori - glad you're here!JM Cartwrighthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15079799019564716584noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-354116340151927281.post-70918852934020367432012-04-11T11:22:15.291-05:002012-04-11T11:22:15.291-05:00Yes - and learning to value the contributions of o...Yes - and learning to value the contributions of others is a life lesson we all need to learn, right?
